Why the Wage?: Production, Space, and the Political Ecology of Class Consciousness

To better understand the cultural-political dynamics on this ideological front, we need to confront the emergence of working-class consciousness among fishers and the choice of unionization as an organizational form, since it does not necessarily follow unproblematically from that consciousness. A discussion of the idea of a union of smallholders, and of the relations of production and resource management in West Coast fisheries, is therefore in order, as is some consideration of the complexity of that sector’s vast spaces of production. These can help explain the emergence, form, and content of the sophisticated political economic arguments, especially the theory of the fisherman’s wage, that the IFAWA developed through its own analyses of its historical condition.
